The change is apparent. In his ramrod-straight physique and his new confidence. Six-footer Vishal is ready to go shirtless and show off his six-pack abs in his forthcoming cop film Sathyam.

One of Kollywood’s famous downsizing stories in recent times, Vishal’s lean-mean look is clearly the result of sweat. “It called for a totally new routine,” rewinds the actor. “My role demanded such a demeanour. Since I play an assistant commissioner of police, I wanted to look like a cop — an absolutely fit one at that. So workouts became an essential part of my routine. Besides, there’s a scene in which I go shirtless, so I had to get ready for that.”

Though not someone to be hit by pre-release angst, Vishal admits he’s quite anxious about Sathyam. “For the past 18 months my life revolved around the film that’s slated for release on August 14. A lot is at stake. This is my biggest film so far — in terms of canvas, technical expertise and budget. Besides, it’s a bilingual. It’s my first straight Telugu film. The very look of Sathyam is slick. It’s mounted on a grand scale like a Shankar film. There’s art by Thota Tharini, visual effects by Hollywood experts and music by Harris Jayaraj. Director Rajashekar’s hard work shows in every scene.”

Divulging details, he continues, “There’s a never-seen-before car chase sequence that lasts for eight minutes. It’s a crucial part of the film. There’s another scene shot at the Dubai airport in which Kannada star Upendra, who plays the villain, chases the hero. These are portions where you can’t tell if it’s visual effects or real! I was bored of my usual fist fights. So we had to try out different action sequences. Besides, there are so many misgivings about encounters in cop films. Sathyam digs out the truth.”

Talk about action being his forte, and Vishal says earnestly, “It’s not that I want to do only action flicks. I’m just choosing from the best that’s offered to me. Post-Sandakozhi, which ran to packed halls for 210 days, I wanted to capitalise on my strong points. Thimiru followed, and it looked like action was something the audience expected of me. Though I tried comedy in Malaikotai and soaked in family sentiment in Tamiraparani, action was the core of these scripts too.

Incidentally, Sathyam is something that came to him immediately after Sandakozhi. “But I didn’t take it up then. I felt I needed to fine-tune my histrionics and fine-tone my physique. I’ve done tremendous homework for my role in Sathyam. I picked up inputs about body language, etc., from top cop C. Sylendra Babu. I can’t afford to mess up.”

Vishal, who started off as an assistant director before turning actor, says, “It helps to have that kind of a background, because you know what a director expects. My chemistry with my directors is often better than that with my heroines (laughs). But I can be a nuisance sometimes. I poke my nose into a lot of things — right from the coconut that’s bought for the puja.”

Though a star of some consequence today, Vishal’s heart still beats for direction. He will soon direct his dream film on a superhero — to be played by him. “I love fantasy characters. The South must have its own superhero. I’m working on the script. If it does well, there will be sequels too.”

Vishal, who is in no hurry to sign films, says, “I’ll be doing Udayanidhi Stalin’s forthcoming film. I’d rather take one film at a time and go slow than goof up. Today, an actor kills himself for his role. You have to be a thorough-bred. But the pressure is good. It keeps you on your feet. Tinseldom today is like a garden. A new flower blooms every day. There’s no room for complacency. Either you are a somebody or a nobody.”

Sexy Hansika Motwani Latest Photogallery

Hansika Motwani, the fresh new face of Tollywood, is basking in the glory of her debut film “Desamuduru”. All of 16, this was her first innings as a lead actress, but Hansika is no stranger to the camera. For the uninitiated, hansika is the same girl who won hearts with her performances in Balaji serials like “Kyunki…, Des mein nikla hoga chand” and in movies like “Jaago” and “Koi Mil Gaya” as a child artiste. ” It’s funny how people gasp when they realise that I was the child artiste they saw in serilas about three years ago. I started acting when I was 10 and took a break when I was 13 so that I could arrive in a new avatar. It was my Mom’s decision and it worked. My luck teeth have gone, I have shed the baby fat and people are willing to accept me as a herione now”.

Hot Photogallery Of Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut comes from the hill town of Manali in Himachal Pradesh. She did her schooling from Shimla.Studying as a science student in Shimla, Kangana had never thought that one day she would work in a film under a reputed banner in Bollywood. But she did harbour a dream of acting, a dream that brought her to Delhi where she learnt acting while doing theatre. Then Kangana took another step and came to Mumbai to try her luck in films. Her lucky break did not come straightaway, but after a while when Kangana had already tried unsuccessfully to make an entry into the tinsel town.It happened in September 2005, when Kangana was drinking coffee with one of her friends at a café in Mumbai. Filmmaker Anurag Basu , who had already directed a successful film, Murder , was keeping an open eye for the heroine of his next movie Gangster .It was there Basu spotted Kangana and called her for the audition. Despite the fact that Kangana is not from a filmi background and has no real acting experience, Basu decided to cast her in his film. The rest, as they say, is history.

Sexy Mamata Mohandas riding high

Mamata Mohandas has just returned from the US where she was shooting for her next film, the Venkatesh-starrer Chintakayala Ravi.

She has not had a release in a while but with three of her films- Victory, Homam and Chintakayala Ravi - all set to release one after another, we are surely going to see a lot of her over the next couple of months! The actress, it seems, is very happy with the way the films have shaped up. "I am eagerly looking forward to the release of these three films.

I am happy that I got to play three characters that are completely different from each other. I enjoyed playing each character and can't wait to see the audience response," says a jubilant Mamata. That's not all, the singer-turned-actress has also lent her voice for a song each in both Victory and Homam.

The song in Homam especially has got everybody talking. "I play a doctor's character in the film and it's a situational song in the film when the two lead characters express their love for the first time. So it had to be sensual," she laughs. Mamata has not signed any Telugu films for now.

"Presently, I am busy doing a Tamil film with Madhavan and Abbas. I would like to wait for my films to hit the screens before I take on any more Tollywood assignments," she said.

Sexy charmi in love with handsome bollwood star

Who Charmi considered her competition? She said, “Nobody is competition. Trisha and Nayathara are all friends. I only compete with myself. On her ranking in the Telugu film industry the actress said, “I don’t believe in this concept of being number one or two.” On the kind of roles she was looking for, she said, “I love doing commercial films. But I also want to do character and female-oriented roles. I think glamour is very necessary. Glamour is different from revealing skin. I know my limits,” she said. When asked how much she charged for a movie, the actress smiled and said, “I’ve just had an income tax raid in my home. Why do you want to put me in problems?”

The actress seemed to be pleasantly surprised when told that Prabhu Deva considered her to be one of the finest dancers. “Is that true,” she asked. “Prabhu Deva is like a family friend. He taught me classical dance. But he’s never told me that I was a good dancer,” she said. The actress disclosed that she was working on a yet to be titled project in which she was playing a negative character. “The movie is being directed by Prakash,” she said and added that she was also acting in Kausalya Supraja Rama. The actress created quite a buzz when she said she loved Ranbir Kapoor. “I loved his performance in Saawariya," she said. Would she consider marrying him if he proposed? “I will have to ask my mom and dad,” she replied.

‘Maadambi' at the top

Mohanlal's 'Maadambi' rules the Kerala box office, this weekend. The top five in the list are:

1. ‘Maadambi’- Mohanlal will have a sign of big relief as his new flick 'Maadambi' has started with the typical Mohanlal opening and is registering the cash boxes tingling all through the week. The movie is said to have grossed around 2.5 crores from its first week, one of the biggest ever collections for a Lal starrer in the opening week. The movie is expected to end up as a big hit.

5. 'Annan Thampi'- Mammootty's ‘Annan Thampi’ is in its last lap of reaching hundred days. The movie continues in very few of its releasing centers, but have already collected enough to be proclaimed as the first mega hit of the year.

Preview : Pazhassi Raja

A movie on the life of one of the greatest of the rulers of Kerala has been in the rounds for the last two decades. In fact, MT Vasudevan Nair, one of the master scriptwriters of all times, had been on this thinking from the days of his 'Oru Vadakkan Veergatha' which came out in 1989. Now after 18 years from this epoch making movie, 'Pazhassi Raja' is slowly but steadily shaping up under the directorial ship of ace director Hariharan,to become the biggest epic movie of our times.

The movie which was in the making since May, last year is into its last session which will get completed with another 25 days of shoot. Most of the important scenes of the movie are shot with four cameras working simultaneously. The movie planned with the biggest ever budget for a Malayalam movie (rumored to be more than eight crores), is produced by Gokulam Gopalan, who also consider the movie as his prestige project.

This magnum opus is expected to bring out the story of the first organized revolt against British rule, led by Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja of the Padinjare Kovilakom of the Kottayam family near Thalassery in Kannur district.

“The story of ‘Pazhassi Raja' one of our first, but least known freedom fighters, appealed to me also because it offered tremendous visual possibilities in the backdrops of the forests and the wars. We know about the high expectations people have on the film and are confident that we will be able to live up to it'', says the director Hariharan.

‘Pazhassi Raja’ popularly known as the Lion of Kerala isn't well known outside Kerala, but he was one of our country's first freedom fighters. He had to reckon with the armies of the Mysore rulers as well as the British. The British first used him against Tipu's army and then reneged on their treaty. And more, the Raja was agitated by the unpopular revenue policy followed by the East India Company in Malabar .He then threatened to stop collecting taxes if the Company continued with this mode of revenue collection. Even before the much celebrated Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, Raja spear headed an attack against the British who made a futile attempt to capture the Raja in his own palace at Pazhassi in April 1796.

The British company then made proclamations which forbid people from supporting the Raja, threatening to confiscate the property of all who are supporting Pazhassi. In 1797 the Raja's men launched attack on the security personnel stationed at Pazhassi, and in continuous battles that were fought over three days, Pazhassi's men were able to overpower the British forces, using swords, spears, bows and arrows . With an army of thousands of Nairs , Pazhassi inflicted such defeat on the British that they were forced to retreat and negotiate. This forced the British to sign a temporary armistice, in accordance with Raja's wishes.

‘Pazhassi Raja’ once again revolted against the occupants when the British decide to take over Wynad in 1799, after the fall of Sreerenga Patanam. This time the British had an upper hand as they controlled most of the south. They confiscated Raja's properties and proclaimed a reward for capturing him. Raja who fled from the palace, took refuge in the jungles accompanied by his wife and immediate attendants.

Raja tried to continue his warfare with the help of aadivasas and his loyal Kurichiyar tribe. Using guerrilla tactics and informers, he kept the British on tenterhooks for longer than any other regional ruler. But on November 30 1805, the Raja was surrounded by Thomas Harvey Babar, a young British officer on charge of suppressing Pazhaassi and was shot dead in an operation on the banks of Mavila Thodu.

Hariharan, MT Vasudevan Nair and Mammootty, are sure that they are in the making of and a film that will become a milestone in Malayalam cinema. Mammootty plays the large tha

Review : Madambi

The biggest deserving debate of the recent times in Mollywood has been mainly about the non availability of refreshing story lines and imaginative writers. Recycling seems to be word that is awfully repeated in this industry from the word 'go'.

Adding to the list of these rehashed genres is B Unnikrishnan's 'Maadambi’, which doesn't have anything fresh to offer. Every events and characters that you witness in the movie reminds of many that you had been with, much before. With a basic storyline as old as the hill, and Mohanlal in his every typical mannerism, why do you find ‘Maadambi’, an above average film?

With typical commingled formula stuff sprinkled all through, the movie largely captures our interest mainly due to the slick pace and undeviating narratives which never wander out of the lead lines.

The film is scripted in the lines of plenty of the old hits like Midhya, Vesham, Balettan, Valiettan and Valtsalyam taking bits and pieces from its every predecessor. The plot lines of sacrifices of the elder brother for the younger, seems one beaten up to death, but smart packaging is all that makes a difference to make the movie work.

Mohanlal for the first time in his career is appearing as a cunning money lender and a local banker, Puthen Veetil Gopalakrishna Pillai, from Ilavattom village in Pathanamthitta. And off course this is one of the rare films in which the super star has taken particular care to sound his accent so original to that of this central travancore district.

Set against this feudal Nair backdrop with ancestral mansions to the majestic 'Gajaveeran', Goplakrishna Pillai has a horrifying past, where his irresponsible father (Saikumar), a patron of arts and temple festivals has mismanaged their entire fortune to end up pennyless. The cheating of his good friend Parameshwara Kurup, who then built up a decent life for himself with the grabbed accounts, made Pillai's father vanish from the village leaving his wife and two small children Pillai has given a word to his father -to bring up his younger brother and to look after his mother without peril and for that he has rebuilt all the lost grandeur, working day and night from his younger age as a shrewd businessman, more a cunning money lender.

So the stage is set, with Kurup and his venomous sons always looking forward to devastate Pillai and the protagonist taking all steps to remain unscathed from the brooding enemies. Into this atmosphere arrives Jayalakshmi with a branch of a new generation bank. Pillai’s younger brother Ramakrishnan is an aspiring movie star who does not like to work on any thing, seriously. The whole twists came up when Ramakrishnan falls for the Kurup's daughter. Kurup and his sons agrees for the marriage but had already plotted the plans for the ultimate destruction of Pillai. They persuade Ramakrishnan to bring down his brother .How Pillai stands the tycoon unleashed against him follows the rest of the very predictable flick.

The major drawback of the plot other than its recycled feel is the unconvincing final twists and flash backs. Even the court scenes appear too stagy and dramatic. Mohanlal as Pillai acts effortless but little can match his earlier similar ''ever sacrificing brother” roles like that of Balettan. Unnikrishanan has taken special care '' even to present the most brilliant actor of Mollywood, just the same way he was presented in ''Vellanakaludenadu'', 18 years ago. Kavya appear pretty but is in an undemanding role with not even a single romantic scene with Lal. Ajmal Ameer as the self-centered younger brother and Mallika Kapoor as his sympathetic wife looks out sync with the timing of the other seniors in the frames like Pillai’s lawyer Mohankumar ( Jagathy) or the local 'Karayogam' president (Innocent). Infact the Ajmal's and Mallika’s character sketches are straight lift from the hit movie 'Vesham', with events shaping up very much similar to the later. Even the supporting characters and villains are typically regular ones, in their most regular outings and dialogues. Infact, the scriptwritor in Unnikrishnan seems to have never attempted to create anything in original than to recreate. Instead, he sticks to the most conservative image and sequences that hit films of Lal always exhibits.

Despite the shortcomings, ‘Maadambi’ works for a number of solid reasons and that's what the viewer carries home. Mohanlal has got his share of punch lines like ''athu nee thaangathille' which goes very well with the audience , and he maintains a brilliant restrained act ,all through .Apart from the lead star's unfussy performances, the movie hold fast a strict pace thanks to good editing from Manoj. The music and rerecording of the movie by M. Jayachandran is another highlight of the movie. The songs like ''Ammamazha'' are quite hummable. Vijay Ulakanathan’s camerawork also perfectly suits the mood of the movie, though a couple of scenes seem to have been shot at noon with dark shadows all around.

Don't expect too many fireworks and typical Lal numbers from 'Maadambi'. It's an extremely simple, uncomplicated old faschioned tale that never goes over the top. And if you are too addicted with the family movies of the eighties and nineties, this seems to be your best bet that has arrived in the recent times.
