Sans godfather, sans the conventional pretty face, but with a freshness and charm that's unmistakable. Juhi brought it to the screen in the 80s and Kajol and Preity Zinta in the 90s. Genelia D'Souza is the new kid, nay the lady, on the Bolly block.

Playing the lead in an Aamir Khan production, opposite his nephew Imran Khan, and having impressed with Mere Baap Pehle Aap, the actress who found success down South is now making waves in Bollywood. With a slew of hits in Tamil and Telugu, just when Genelia looked set for a long innings down South, destiny transported her to the brink of Bombay dreams...

Bollywood calling

As the much-awaited Imran-Genelia starrer gets ready to hit the screens, Genelia looks ready for the limelight. "It's a fun film and we’ve all had a smashing time working on it. For now I am keeping fingers crossed and hoping for the best," says Genelia.
Armed with an expressive pair of dark eyes and a smile that could light up a room, Genelia has been the quintessential girl-next door, a tag that seems only too apt for her. But we wonder if she entertains any thoughts of branching out of that mould on the big stage of Bollywood. "Honestly, I am not in any hurry to do anything different just for the sake of it. Each character has different shades to it and as long as the role excites me in some way, I will take it up," she replies. It sure helps to keep things short and simple, doesn't it?

Genelia has a lot to look forward to. She is presently shooting for It's My Life opposite Bollywood's latest poster boy, Harman Baweja. The film is being directed by Aneez Bazme. Besides she's also signed up for another multi-starrer titled Life Partner with Govinda and Fardeen.

Destiny's child

They say destiny is more a matter of choice than chance, but it seems to be a bit of both with Genelia. Born in England, she moved to Mumbai dreaming of becoming an actress and it’s been a roller coaster ride so far. After a successful modelling stint, she made her debut in director Sankar's trendsetting teen flick Boys, which was a big success in both Hindi and down South. She starred in another Hindi film Tujhe Meri Kasam, which didn't stir the BO. With the South baiting her with many lucrative offers, the move down South was inevitable. "I think I am God's favourite child. In an industry where women would be lucky to get a couple of films, I have got the opportunity to work in some great ones. There have been many ups and downs, but it's been one awesome experience so far," says an excited Genelia.

While down South, most find her freshness akin to PZ, Aamir Khan went on record saying she reminded him of Juhi Chawla! It just goes to show that she makes an impression. She's the charming girl who rushed to Amitabh Bachchan for his autograph in the famous pen commercial. With so much happening, it's most important to have your wits about you and Genelia certainly looks up for it. "It just feels great to have people scream your name in a crowd. I am an actor while I'm on the sets. But, I have a life beside films and it keeps me grounded," she concludes.

Vidhu Prathap to marry

Young singer Vidhu Prathap is planning to marry by August. One of the most gifted singers of our times, Vidhu will marry Deepthy Prasad on the 20th of August at Subrahmanian hall at the capital city.

Deepthy Prasad is the daughter of a Classical Dancer who is promoting the art at Germany. Vidhu has also arranged for a reception at the Thrissur Lulu centre on the 23rd of the same month.

Vidhu Prathap who hit big time with his song in 'Niram', is now widely acknowledged as the voice of actor Prithviraj, singing most of the songs for Prithviraj's films.

Megastar Mammootty has been lucky enough to play himself in many movies, in the past. Films like 'Lekshayude Maranam’, ‘Oru Flash Back' and 'Number 20 Madras Mail', featured him as Mammootty, the real superstar.

Recently he played a cameo as a filmi super star in 'Katha Parayumbol' which brought rave reviews to his short but powerful performance. After the stupendous success of 'Katha Parayumbol' which is being remade in many languages, Mammootty is once again appearing as himself in the new film by Bipin Prabhakar 'One Way Ticket'. It is a casting coup of sorts for writer Babu Janardanan and Bipin Prabhakar as Mammootty has agreed to do the film with Prithviraj playing the hero.

'One Way Ticket' is basically the story of crazy fans of superstars who go to any extent to promote their screen idols and their movies. They even sacrifice their own career trying to promote their favorite stars.

The story of the movie written by Babu Janardanan is set in Kondotty in Malappuram district, Mammootty's traditional stronghold. The plot of the film is envisaged in such a way that the film's narratives gets completed with the events between the release of a superstar film, to the hundred days celebration of the same movie at the same theater.

In the film, Prithviraj plays Kunjappu, a well educated youth who due to circumstances is forced to become a taxi jeep driver. He is the only hope of his family comprising of two unmarried sisters and his mother.

He is an ardent viewer of movies, a crazy fan of superstar Mammootty and the district president of Mammootty fans association! Kunjappau's fan activities very easily make him a clown before all his immediate family members. His uncle Beeran Haji, is even trying many ways to avoid marrying off his daughter Sahira to Kunjappu.

The movie is full of comedy, bringing to focus the tastes and activities of the youth in Malappuram like Kuri Kalyanam to Sevens football. It will also bring to focus Mammootty's love for football, his plans to popularize the game in the state and will look upon how his fans share the views and reviews about actor's interest in social sphere.

The second half of 'One Way Ticket' is planned as a racy thriller, as Mammootty comes to celebrate the 100 days run of his film in a Kondotty theatre, being celebrated as an event by his fans. The film will offer some messages for serious thinking and will feature scenes where the super star supports his fans who are more involved in social support activities than in the promotion of stardom. Mammootty even has got a song eulogizing his stardom in this movie, which also shows the many positive sides of fans associations.

Bhama, for the first time appears as Prithviraj’s heroine in the film, which also has Thilakan, Jagathy, Jagadheesh, Sivaji Guruvayoor, Manianpillai Raju, Sadiq, Radhika and Tamil actor Sambath. Vipin Mohan will crank the camera while Gireesh Puthencheery and Kavya Madhavan pen the lyrics for the songs of the movie which are set to music by Raahul Raj. Renjan Abraham does the editing while Saalu K George is the art director.

The movie shot at Ottappalam, Kunnamkulam and Palghat will feature a lot of real life fans of the star in many scenes.

‘One Way Ticket' produced by Thiruvangadan Entertainments is being distributed by Minerva and is scheduled to reach the theatres, this month.

Kulesan audio rights sold for Rs 2.25 crore !

The mere name of superstar Rajinikanth sells. The audio rights of Kuselan, has been snapped by Big Music, an Anil Dhirubhai Ambani group company for a new record high of Rs 2.25 crore! Remember Rajini is only making a special appearance in the film. The film has music by G V Prakash.

According to industry sources, the huge price is only because of the magic of Rajinikanth and nothing else. Umesh Pai of Big Music says, "Kuselan has five songs, with a Daler Mehendi number being the highlight. The others who have rendered their voice for the album include Shankar Mahadevan, Kailash Kher, Shriya Ghosal and Hariharan." The audio is likely to be launched on June 30 in Chennai.

National Fim Awards : Priyamani - Best Actress

Legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam selects actress Priyamani to play second heroine in his next project. The film, which is to be made simultaneously in Tamil and Hindi, will feature Vikram as hero in Tamil, while Abhishek Bachchan will feature in the Hindi version. Aishwarya Bachchan plays heroine in both the versions.

Prithviraj will be playing the role of villain and Priyamani has been chosen to pair up with him. It may be recalled that in Ayutha Ezhuthu, Mani shows Maddy as a baddy and Meera Jasmine as his wife. Budding actor Hansika Motwani, who made her Bollywood debut opposite Himesh Reshammiya in “Aap Ka Suroor”, has a natural flair for painting and hits the canvass whenever she gets time. National Film Awards 2006 Announced : Pulijanmam - Best Movie

Malayalam Cinema has got a long list of serious film makers who made the state proud with their meticulous creative flair. Adoor, Aravindan, JohnAbraham, P A Backar, Pavithram.... and the list continues with awesome population. But the changing times had demarked the value of serious film makers among the masses. Still some from the new generation find it aspiring being with contentful cinema. Priyanandhanan is one such film maker, who has created unparallel brilliance with his maiden venture 'Neythukaaran'. Evenly following the same track of imagery is his second flick 'Pulijanmam' which is currently in theatres.

Pulijanmam is based on the famous drama by N Prabhakaran with the same title. The film is a reconciliation of the drama theme which is based on puranic, ethnic characters and situations with that of today. The film tells the story of contemporary society through the eyes of an activist, who is there to speak for the public, their problems and their undertakings.

Prakashan(Murali), the protogonist of the film is a degree holder who finds it difficult to adjust with his ideas of social existance with that, which is already prevailing in the society. Prakashan cannot digest even the political parties and the societal figures who have no sincerity in what they speak and what they do.

In the meantime Prakashan plans to stage the play Pulijanmam for a club fiunction. He himself rehearsals to portray the central character in the drama, Thondachhan Theyyam KariGurukkal, who is a character borne from the backward classes. In the drama, Kari Gurukkal is camouflaging as a tiger to go to Puliyoorkuunu to bring the tail hair(pulijada and pulivaal) to treat the disease of the ruler of the desaam, popularly called as Vazhunnor, who is affected with wrathfulness and hysteria. In that process, the drama, climaxes to the sympathetic situation of Gurukkal who is left in the role of a tiger with no chance of coming back to humanness.

For playing the role of Vellachi, the female lead in the drama, Prakashan finds Shahina(played by SindhuMenon), a muslim girl who is also left desolate in societal barrenness. Shahina try to open up Prakashan to feel heartened to his ideologies. The rehearsals just goes on but the real staging never happens following the communal riots that grip the area. As the societal breakage deepens, Prakashan and Shahina are left with their woes and wraths in disapproving realities. Prakashan finds every situation from what he rehearsed for long in the footlights, to happen in his life.

The film also addreswes the many issues in Kerala's social sphere like non availabilty of drinking water, hotel business, revenue recoveries and communal mishaps and riots. Murali as Prakashan has again raked in a absorbing performance through out the proceeedings. The film is ably scripted with flair by N Prabhakaran and N Sasidharan. Set to needed beautiful ambience by cinematographer K G Jayan, the film also stars Vineeth Kumar, Salim Kumar, Sreeraaman, Samvritha Sunil and Irshaad. The film produced by M G Vijayan in the banner of Amma films is released through Ullatil Media Vision.

Eventhough the crowd doesn't seem to grace the theatres for long for this serious attempt, it's sure to bring in much prizes and accolodes to the mother language. Moreover Murali is of sure to be rewarded in plenty by the film fraternity for his majestic performances.

Nayanatara is getting more footage than Rajini Kanth

In the upcoming film Kucheludu, Nayanatara is paired opposite Rajini kanth. Nayanatara is getting more footage than Rajini Kanth in the film. Many south Indian star heroes don't like giving lengthy role to heroine . But Rajini doesn't care for such thing and asks director to proceed if the script demands.

Though the film is the remake of Malayalam film, Director P Vasu made some changes to fit the Telugu audiences. Now a solo song on Nayanatara is being filmed at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad. The Telugu version is produced by Chalasani Aswini Dutt.

MACTA, Malayalam cine technician's association is all set for a big split, following the Dileep issue.

Majority of the popular directors of the association has tendered their resignation from the membership in the association. Prominent directors like Joshy, Sathyan Anthikkad, Renjith, Padmakumar, Shafi, Johny Antony, Jose Thomas and another twenty popular names in direction are in the list of directors who had decided to move away from the association.

Almost all of them feel that the Dileep issue was not dealt in a proper way and Vinayan, the general secretary of MACTA, has been imposing his decisions and interests in the name of the association.

The scriptwriter's union and cinematographer's union of MACTA are also offering their full fledged support to the members who have resigned from the organization.

With more and more resignation letters from members of various associated unions coming up, MACTA and its general secretary Vinayan, is all set to be on news, this whole week.

Charmi wants compete with Kamal Hasan

Charmy- the Punjabi bubly girl came in limelight of Telugu film industry with the film Sreeanjaneyam of Krishna Vamsy. After battling all the production hassles while filming India's biggest ever sci-fi flick LOVE STORY 2050, producer-director Harry Baweja has finally embarked to hit screens in a big way. Being made on a lavish budget of more than 40 crore, the film travels back and forth in time.

The music of Love Story 2050 has been composed by ace music composer Anu Malik. QT, a friendly femme robot and BOO, a small robotic teddy bear play their distinct roles in bringing the love story of Karan and Sana together but soon they find themselves under the threat of the demi-god of the future, Dr. Hoshi. Will Karan be able to overcome the threat of Dr. Hoshi and win his love and travel back in time?
