`Pardesi` is complete!
![]() Mohanlal spoke to Moviebuzz:" It is one of the most difficult roles that I have done in my career. The life span of Valiyakathu Moosa, the character I play in the film is from 35 to his 90 year and is divided into four periods, for which I have four different looks". Mohanlal added that there are a lot of people like Moosa in Malappuram district of Kerala, who still hold their Pakistani passports, even though they have come back from there in the 60's. Added P.T Kunjumohammad : "After seeing the rushes of what we had shot so far, I'm stunned by Mohanlal's performance.He is so real as he lives the character of Moosa." Mohanlal's ‘Man Friday’ Antony Perumbavoor producer of his mass masala films like Narasimham and recent Baba Kalyani is making Pardesi under a new banner ‘A and A productions’. |

Mammootty is Nasrani!
![]() Nasrani is going to be Mammootty's big Onam 2007 release, likely to clash with Mohanlal's Ali Bhai. The film is produced by M.Rajan of ‘Horizon Entertainments’. It will be an out and out fun movie, laced with action and sentiments. A girl from Bollywood will play the heroine. It was Joshy who first gave Mammootty an Achayan image with Sangham in the late 80's. This was followed by a series of similar larger than life characters in spotless white mundu and juba, and a Rayban cooling glass! Who can forget Mammootty in Kottayam Kunjachan? So Mammootty as Nasrani, with Ranjit's punchline dialogues and Joshy's direction is sure going to be a treat for his fans!

Parvathy Melton opposite Mohanlal!

Mohanlal's fans were of the opinion that their “Lal ettan” was not taking enough care when it comes to choosing his leading ladies.
For his new film Hello, directed by Rafi Mecartin, he has got a Bangalore based model Parvathy Melton who featured with him and Hema Malini in the 'Malabar Gold' advertisement campaign. Parvathy has also acted in a few Telugu films and has a glamour image.
The shoot of the film starts in Karaikudi from March 27. It will be an out and out comedy by the best in the business, the director duo Rafi and Mecartin who are doing their first film with the superstar.
Later in May, Mohanlal comes together with the current flavour of Malayalam cinema Gopika in Shaji Kailas’s mass movie Ali Bhai. The film produced by Antony Perumbavoor will be Mohanlal’s big Onam-2007 film.

Payum Puli
Movie Payum Puli
Director Kabeer Palakkad
Producer Kabeer Palakkad
Music Mohan Sitara
Cast Kalabhavan Mani, Rambha, Jagathy Sreekumar, Sai Kumar, Riaz Khan
Post Your Review
Kalabhavan Mani seems to be the only alternative to the superstars in the action hero genre. Mani as an action hero mouthing punchlines, fighting and dancing works to a certain extent in B and smaller stations. These films are made on a shoe string budget and come out with factory precision.
The latest from Kalabhavan Mani's film factory is Payum Puli, directed by Mohan Kupplery and is a time pass masala film etched from various Tamil and old Mohanlal films. Mani provides all ingredients that one associates with a Tamil mass film, including glamour in the form of Rambha.
The story is as old as the hills. Saravanan (Mani) is an orphan living in Kozhikode who is street smart and is also rough and tough. His mentor Moosaka (T.G Ravi) one day asks him to go to Kochi and work for a private finance company to be their money collector. He agrees on his terms, which means he will only recover from the rich and greedy and not the poor.
Soon Saravanan falls in love with Malli (Rambha) whose family is now living in penury, though they have a big house. The bad guy is Jose ettan the guy who rules Kochi market place and his son Issac (Riaz Khan), who has an eye on Malli and her property. Saravanan takes up the cudgels for them, and how he ultimately triumphs forms rest of the story.
There is not even a scene which is original, at the same time Payum Puli is racy and has enough masalas to please the common man who is looking for time pass entertainment. Mani as an action hero may not be everybody's cup of tea, still he makes it enjoyable. If Rambha was not enough with her glamour, then there is sexy oomph girl Babilona in an item song! All said it is masala, well packaged for two hours.

Notebook
![]()
| |||||||
| Rosshan Anddrews and his debut film Udayananu Tharam is one of the classics in Malayalam cinema ( Sify verdict: Excellent) Now 23 months after that path breaking film, Rosshan’s Notebook with an all new star cast has hit the screens. So it was but natural for us to rush to the cinemas on opening day, opening show to watch this much talked about Rosshan’s brave new attempt at Rs 3 crore. But sadly, the director has slipped with a weak and undernourished love story set in a boarding school that makes you snooze. If Udayan was a masterpiece in screenplay writing (Thanks to Sreenivasan), Notebook’s major flaw is the story and screenplay by Bobby and Sanjay. This completely insensitive film is excessively verbose with three girls as protagonists holed up in a boarding school trying to iron out their emotional problems through passionate dialogues. Pooja( Parvathy ), Sridevi( Maria ) and Saira( Roma ) are classmates and close friends in twelfth standard studying in Lord’s Academy in Ooty. Pooja lives with her mother (Seeta) and she is the school leader and the brightest student in class. Saira comes from a broken home (Suresh Gopi & Aishwarya) and is the naughty one with a heart of gold. She always playing pranks and gets caught often by Principal whom the girls call ‘Dracula’. Sridevi’s parents (Prem Prakash & Sukanya) dot on their daughter. Saira and Sridevi are in hostel. There are two guys Firoz( Majo Joseph) and Suraj Menon(Sooraj) in their class. Firoz is a meek guy, bad in studies but is crazy about music and Suraj is the hero of the class. Slowly Suraj falls in love with Sridevi and in a school excursion they end up making love which results in Sridevi becoming pregnant. How Saira and Pooja deal the situation and what follows form the rest of the story. The weakest link in Notebook is its script and presentation. The director has inflicted us with a film which has no coherence, consistent plot and the screenplay is amateurish and moves at snail pace. The all new star cast infuses energy into their roles but a boring and monotonous script lets them down completely. The screenplay is littered with embarrassing gags. When Sridevi gets her periods during her practical exams Saira and Pooja asks Suraj (who ultimately falls for Sri) to go and get sanitary napkins! It is ludicrous humour and the dialogues (the salesman asks him whether he wants ‘Whisper large size with wings’!) is more puerile and in low taste. However, the plus points of the film are the camera of C.Divakar and the songs tuned by Majo Joseph who also plays Firoz the wannabe musician. The number “Changati Kootam Vanne…” is the pick of the lot and well picturised , against Sunil Babu’s lovely sets. Among the newcomers it is Roma as Saira who gives a very impressive performance. Parvathy the Kiran TV veejay and Maria are promising. But Suresh Gopi is the scene stealer especially in the scene in which he takes his daughter’s side at the Principal’s office room. The actor who made the role of the strict principal life like deserves a special mention. There are too many songs in the first half and the story just does not move for 90 minutes in the first half. Where was editor Ranjan Abraham? On the whole Rosshan who wanted to make a cute film set in school milieu that's naughty and nice, ends up dishing out a fare that looks more like a documentary on periods, pregnancy, its detection and abortion |

Inspector Garud
![]()
| |||||||
| The comedy team- writers Udayakrishnan & Sibi K.Thomas, director Johnny Antony and Dileep are back with yet another slapstick comedy for the masses with large dose of crude and inane jokes. They believe that no joke is too low to be cracked as long as there is an audience for it. Here is the far out plot- Madhavan Kutty better known by his nickname Garuda (Dileep) is one of the most corrupt cop in Kerala police always on the look out to make a fast buck. He justifies it by saying that he has paid a bribe of Rs 15 Lakhs to get the job and has now become a Circle Inspector! The corrupt Home Minister (T.P.Madhavan) puts him in charge to help Chettiar (Vijayaraghavan) a guy with a permanent scowl on his face who is hand-in-glove with Guptaji an international gun runner who is supplying ammunitions to terrorist organizations. A consignment of arms reach Kochi meant for LTTE and Chettiar is keeping it in a colony run by him. An honest cop Rajan Joseph (Lalu Alex) is sacked by the Home Minister discovers the plot but is sacked by the Home minister. Garuda saves Chettiar at the same time rips him off. Meanwhile, Madhavan Kutty is humiliated by the new sub collector Sethulakshmi (Kavya Madhavn) who make shim apologize to her in front of the Vanitha commission. He takes revenge by working out a marriage with Sethulakshmi under pressure leading to further complications. Finally Garuda has a change of heart and turns a new leaf and takes on the baddies. There are half a dozen stock buddy comedy characters you have seen in earlier films- Salim Kumar, Harisri Asokan, Cochin Haneefa etc. trying desperately for maximum guffaws when in actuality they might warrant no more than a chuckle. To be fair some of the moments are truly hilarious. The wedding scene between the lead pair and Dileep telling the Vanitha commission that he can call the sub-collector (his wife) Edi, Podi! And the scene in police station where Harisri Asokan thinks that Garuda is a petty thief and bad mouths him in front of other cops without realizing he is the new circle inspector. Another problem is that Inspector Gurud does not have a single original bone in its body. Typical of Johnny Antony, generous tributes have been paid off to a dozen Kollywood and Bollywood films. One of the songs in which Dileep dresses in a suit is a straight lift from Rajni hit song Kick Eeruthe.. from Padayappa. For Dileep, playing the title role comes naturally to him and he excels in slapstick madness. But his pairing with Kavya is a bit stale. If crude gags and slapsticks galore are your idea of fun then Inspector Garud is worth a laugh. |

Mayavi
| Mayavi | |
![]()
| ||||||
| Mammootty is back as a mass masala hero in Mayavi, where he plays wildly to the galleries. Director Shafi has evolved as our new comedy king, taking off where Priyadarsan left the last laugh. Remember, that Mammooka and Shafi are a hit pair, as their last outing together was the immensely enjoyable Thommanum Makkalum. Once again the duo is able to churn out a light hearted entertainer that suitably tickles the funny bone. Actually it is Mammooty’s best knockout comedy since Rajamanickam! It is a bit of Daredevil and Mask put together, but the madness works. Mahendran or Mahi (Mammootty) is a do-gooder and the saviour of the needy. At the same time he does Irutadi to the anti-socials and scum of the earth in the darkness of the night, masquerading under the name of “Mayavi”! Nobody knows who this avenging angel is, but it creates a halo around our local superman. During one of his attempts to help others, Mahi goes to jail where he meets Balan (Manoj.K.Jayan) and strikes a rapport with him. Mahi promises to help Balan in finding money for his brothers brain surgery. Once he comes out of jail he is willing to take the rap for a murder he did not commit, so that he can make money to help Balan’s brother! The bad guys who employ Mahi are Thotapalli Surendran (Vijayaraghavan) and his brother who wants to eliminate their rival Sankaran Kutty (Sai Kumar) who had killed their dad! Meanwhile Mahi meets Indu (Gopika) under difficult situations and does the `Mayavi` act, and helps her and her people which lead to the climax. The trouble with the story is that there are far too many characters who pop-in-and-out and their only link is `Mayavi`. Still Rafi-Mecartin who has written the script and an array of comedians – Salim Kumar, Suraj Venjaranmoodu and Manikuttan provides some sparkling and at times downright silly buffoonery. And finally director Shafi smartly etches Mammootty’s character which is enjoyable and the actor is able to create newness in his comic dialogue delivery. Here is one actor who keeps growing in terms of talent, with each film. Gopika surprisingly is perfect match for our hero. The others are all adequate. The music of Alex Paul is ok, with the duet Muttathe Mulla….., being the pick of the album. Sanjiv Shankar’s camera has well etched the lovely Kochi locations. The second half drags a bit. But nevertheless, go, have your share of fun. |

Detective
![]()
| |||||
| Suresh Gopi’s Detective is a fast moving investigative thriller with twists and suspense till the end. New director Jithu Joseph has made the film racy and the highlight is Suresh Gopi in a dual role. As a simple down-to-earth politician and his half brother a shrewd intelligent investigative cop he is good and delivers quite a kick! Mohan Kumar (Suresh Gopi) is a popular young aspiring politician who is all set to contest the by-elections in state assembly. His attractive and ambitious wife Reshmi (Sindhu Menon) is found dead and the local police investigation proves that it was a suicide. Reshmi had left a suicide note saying that she is taking this step not able to cope up with her husband’s torture. Naturally Mohan Kumar is arrested and is send to jail. Chief Minister (Prem Prakash) to whose party Mohan belongs has very high opinion and trust in him as an idealistic young politician. Urged by the opposition leader (Cochin Haneefa), CM is forced to bring top detective Shyam Prasad (Suresh Gopi) to investigate the case. The opposition has a reason as Shyam is the half brother of Mohan and they hate each other. But Shyam is a nice guy who slowly understands Mohan’s frustrations and insecurities in life and slowly uncovers the mystery behind Reshmi’s suicide. He finds that it was a calculated cold blooded murder and now his job is to find out who is behind it? Jithu Joseph who has also written the screenplay has made the film an edge-of-the-seat thriller though the basic plot and presentation seems to be highly inspired from Oru CBI Diary Kurippu . The way Shyam walks, talks, dresses and speaks reminds you of Mammootty as Sethurama Iyer! Suresh Gopi is there in all the frames and he is in top form. The rest of the characters are all apt and does their roles to conviction. The only weakness is that the film loses speed in the climax as the reason for the murder is not convincing and lacks logic. But Detective is a ready made investigative masala that works mainly due to Suresh Gopi and his immense screen presence. |

Speed Track
![]()
| ||||||
| Dileep’s much delayed Speed Track directed by debutant Jayasurya is fast, racy, never-a-dull moment entertainer. The script concentrates on Malayalee’s craze for athletics which starts at a very early age and the spirit to win against all odds. It has been packaged well with a star cast that works, glossy look, sentiments, comedy, peppy songs, one-liners and a great performance from Dileep. Arjun (Dileep) is an athlete who joins the BCM sports college with an aim of winning the state championship in athletics. Arjun’s intentions is to get the Rs 10 Lakhs sponsored price money in the competition with which he can pay for the medical treatment of his brother Anil to be done in US. Anil was selected to the state volleyball team but due to Arjun’s carelessness, an accident takes place which puts him on a wheelchair. The elder brother since then has a guilt complex which he wants to get rid, by making his brother walk again. In the sports college Arjun works hard and impresses everybody including Rahul (Madhu Warrier) and his sister Gouri (Gazala). Rahul is tipped to win the 400 meter race which Arjun must win to get the overall championship! Meanwhile Guari falls in love with Arjun and is torn between loyalty to brother and her lover! And then there is a bad guy Vinu (Riaz Khan) who is jealous of Arjun and is also after Gouri and does all the dirty tricks to stop Arjun from winning the championship finals. All this leads to the climax which Arjun must win, if his brother has to walk! Dileep has to be admired as he has to toned his body with work outs at the gym to get the athlete look. He does Arjun with effortless ease and dry humour. Gazala as Gouri is a big surprise packet and looks good. Madhu Warrier is ok while Riaz Khan does his usual villain act Deepak Dev has given some soothing melodies Oru Kinnara Gaanam…sung by Dileep’s favourite singer Udit Narayan is peppy. Yesudas song Paatum Paadi.. is a good melody while the Kokkakko… is a fast number . All the songs are well choreographed. P.Sukumar’s camera especially the climax 400 meter relay race is well-taken. On the whole, Jayasurya’s Speed Track is adrenaline pumping at 2 hours 10 minutes. Have fun. |

Padmapriya is hot!
![]() She won all the private awards and missed out on the state award! The best thing that happened to her was that she was pitted against some of the best actors in the country like Mammootty, Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi and Sreenivasan. Says Priya as she is called:"The kinds of roles offered to heroines in Kerala have a great deal of depth. Added to that I, gained a lot working with some of the giants of Indian Cinema." But what really worked for Priya was that she had the right attitude and rapport with the superstars in the industry. They found that she was ideal to do mature characters and suited their image. Last week Padmapriya delivered a double whammy when she was signed to be one of Mohanlal's heroine in the world renowned director Adoor Gopalakrishnan's new film. And a day later Mammootty introduced her to director Hariharan who cast her in his forthcoming biggie Pazhassi Raja. Now the big question is whether this year she will overtake Kavya Madhavan, the ruling queen of Malayalam cinema? |

`Mayaavi` continues to rock!
![]() Mayaavi is the first blockbuster of 2007 and is another feather on Mammoooka’s cap! The film has collected a distributor’s share of Rs 3.53 Crore in 35 days from 45 screens in Kerala! Simply incredible! In Tiruvananthapuram, a Mohanlal citadel, this Mammootty comedy action film has grossed Rs 31, 25,525 from Ajantha theatre in 28 days! The distributors share is approximately Rs 15 Lakhs! Though Ernakulam Kavitha, has a bigger share of Rs 16.5 Lakhs in same number of days. The way Maayavi is running has raised questions whether the film can do better business than Rajamanickam? It’ s not possible as almost all theatres screening Maayavi has other summer releases lined up for Vishu. Vaisakha Films Rajan the producer and distributor of Mayaavi is in an embarrassing situation. He is distributing producer Manian Pilla Raju’s Chotta Mumbai the Mohanlal mass masala and had initially scheduled the film for April 7. But now with Raju’s permission he has postponed it for Vishu day on April 15.

Sathyan Anthikkad's film gets a name

Sathyan Anthikkad is busy directing Dileep for his next movie.
Sathyan Anthikkad is a director who usually gives titles to his film in the later stages of the production activities.
As this new film with Dileep in the lead is entering completion, Sathyan has decided to finally fix the title. The film will now be called as Vinodayatra.

"The film takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the lackadaisical attitude of Malayali youngsters who hanker for a white collar job and aimlessly waste time on endless debates and discussions on every topic," says the director.
Anthikkad introduces a new heroine in the film. Moreover, this is the director's first film with Dileep in the lead.The film will also feature Mukesh, Meera Jasmine and Seetha in the lead roles. The others in the cast include Innocent, Murali, KPAC Lalitha, Nedumudi Venu, Vijayaraghavan and Parvathy among others.
Produced by M M Hamza, the movie has three songs composed by Ilayaraja for the lyrics of Vayalar Sarathchandra Varma.
The film is planned as a Vishu release and will grace the theatres by the fourth of April.
